Creating an Impact on Women’s Health: Meeting the people behind the Doris A. Howell Foundation

The Howell Foundation would not be able to function without the valuable support of our Board, Friends of Howell and supporters who attend our events religiously! 

But who is behind the Foundation?  A dedicated group of passionate individuals that truly believe in the relevance of women’s health and fully identify with our mission:  to keep the women we love healthy.  Why? Women are typically at the center of the family’s health and wellbeing, and by doing so, we ensure not only the health of our family members, but believe that we can make a difference in the lives of the women in our community. 

As in any group, we have a realm of personalities, professions and preferences!  But that is what makes us a unique organization!  Join us in meeting the exceptional people who have touched the lives of many women in our community!

In March, “To Be or Not to Be in the Tax Preparation Saga” kicks off the series “Meeting the People Behind the Board” with Linda Osborne, CFO for the Foundation.   The profile covers the yearly controversy on whether to hire a tax professional or not.   She does bring up a good point – tax professionals will keep up with the recent tax laws and benefits, especially when dealing with deductions.  A couple of very interesting examples regarding the Affordable Care Act and same-sex marriage are mentioned throughout the profile.  But what is the one single and most valuable piece of advice?  Take it from the expert: beware of tax time scams!  THE IRS WILL NEVER SEND YOU AN E-MAIL or contact you by phone, rather by mail. The Howell Foundation will be kicking off the year with a presentation on tattoos… not the kind that stay with you for life, but the one that can definitely help in saving your life. What was once thought to be science fiction is becoming a reality, thanks to the research of Dr. Todd Coleman at UCSD.  His research is making strides in marrying computer sciences with biology and neurology through the elaboration of a flexible, portable “tattoo” that picks up electric signals in the body and transmits them wirelessly to any medical electrical device through applied mathematics. Two things to keep in mind when discussing your health: Intermittent fasting and sedentary behavior.

Dr. Dorothy Sears, Associate Professor of Medicine from UCSD came to speak at the Howell Foundation's luncheon last May with pretty interesting research on 2 key concerns and how they, for sure, improve or undermine our health: intermittent fasting and sedentary behavior. Turns out our parents were right: Eat your fruits and vegetables and exercise!  With the just released information from the CDC regarding the obesity epidemic in the US --now at 40% for women-- it is more than clear that type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease are also on the rise.  The benefits of a lifestyle makeover are clear: not only does it help to improve our health and reduce the risks of a life-changing disease, but also minimizes the adverse effects of medication while promoting healthy aging.
