Stylin' for Women's Health Research

What does fashion have to do with the Howell Foundation? Increased awareness of the need for women's health research!

One would think that research and fashion have absolutely nothing in common.  Think again.  We have met some of the most stylish researchers of the day!  But for the Howell Foundation, it is not really about being stylish -- which we are!  It is about creating the much needed awareness of the importance of women's health research.

Why is women's health research so important?

Research must be at the forefront of any women’s health initiative.  The exclusion of female subjects in current research efforts translates into women often being misdiagnosed.  In the era of personalized medicine, a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to treating women's health issues based on research results of male subjects, only places women at a critical risk.

The “Ten Best Dressed Awards" Gala is a fun, novel and creative way to bring awareness to the disparities between men and women in current research efforts. The Howell Foundation helps “Keep the Women we Love Healthy” by:

  • Establishing continuity in advancing women’s health by awarding unique research scholarships to undergraduate and post graduate individuals pursuing a career in the medical/biomedical/nursing fields.
  • Supporting researchers who partner with community organizations to address vital health issues involving underserved or “at risk” women in our community.
  • Ensuring that all in our community who care about women are informed by providing  a forum for medical researchers and physicians to convey the very latest information on topics relevant to women's health.

It is truly an honor for the Howell  Foundation to be selected by Leonard Simpson/Fashion Forward as the beneficiary of the "10th Best Dressed Awards" gala, A Decade of Stars.  This event will increase awareness of the importance women’s health research.  Bradford Benter will Chair the gala with Phyllis Parrish and Jeanne Jones.  Maria Stanley and Sandy Redman will co-chair the event with Dr. Carole Banka and Kathleen Franklin, Executive Chairs for the Foundation.  We are very excited and grateful to be sharing this experience with the philanthropy stars in our community; individuals who for 10 years have given selflessly to several charities in our community.

We are especially excited about the Lifetime Achievement Award that Dr. Howell will be recieving for her philanthropic efforts.  A Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist and an internationally renowned leader in pediatrics, Dr. Doris Howell has been a faculty member at Harvard and Duke University Schools of Medicine, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Chair of the UCSD Department of Community and Family Medicine.  She is most beloved by our community for her role as the “mother of hospice care.”

The night promises to be a bang!  With music from the Mar Dels, the excellent setting of the Sheraton Bay and Marina, the support of organizations like the Nemeth Foundation and UBS, to the creative genious that Fashion Forward brings with his spectacular show, we hope to make this night THE philanthropy night of the year!
