Howell Foundation Honored at Soroptimist's Annual Award Ceremony

Soroptimist International held its Annual Award Ceremony this past June to honor individuals and organizations who are making a difference in the community, in their lives and the lives of others.  The Doris A. Howell Foundation was honored with a Scholarship award from our dear partner, Soroptimist International.

"The support we have received from this amazing organization has been crucial to our success.  We are proud to continue partnering with organizations such as Soroptimist International to better the lives of women in our community" comments Dr. Carole Banka, Chair for the Howell Foundation.

It was back in 1995, when, in recognition to Dr. Howell's efforts to better the lives of women in the community, Soroptimist International helped establish the Doris A. Howell Foundation for Women's Health Research. Since then, the Foundation has held over 80 informational events on issues affecting women's health, has donated over half a million dollars to students pursuing women's health medical research, and has started a Community Engagement Initiative Grant Program focused on research that will better the lives of women in our community. And we are proud to say that, 'til this day, Soroptimist has walked hand in hand with the Foundation, becoming one of our biggest fans!

The mission of Soroptimist International is to improve the lives of women and girls in their own communities and around the world. Soroptimists focus on a set of common goals:
  • To strive for human rights for all people and, in particular, to advance the status of women.
  • To develop interest in community, national and international affairs.
  • To develop a spirit of friendship and unity among Soroptimists of all countries.
  • To maintain high ethical standards in business and professional life.
  • To contribute to international understanding and universal friendship.
  • To develop the highest concept of patriotism.

Soroptimist International invited Chief Shelley Zimmerman as the key note speaker for the event.  Being the first and only female Police Chief in the 20 largest cities in the US, the former student of The Ohio State University arrived in San Diego with $200, her suitcase and her guitar. She thought it would be a good idea to join the San Diego Police Department as part of her "training" to enter law school --which never happened.  She fell in love with being a police woman and the responsibilities it entailed.  And the rest is history!

Soroptimist International seized the momentum to announce that their mission for the next three years will be to work towards improving the lives of women veterans in San Diego.

The Doris A. Howell Foundation for Women’s Health Research is committed to keeping the women we love healthy, advancing women’s health through research and educating women to be catalysts for improving family health in the community.

The organization does so by funding scholarships to scientists researching issues affecting women’s health; providing a forum for medical experts, scientists, doctors, researchers, and authors to convey the timely information on topics relevant to women’s health and the health of their families through its Lecture and Evening Series, and by funding research initiatives that will create women’s health awareness and advocacy in the community.
