Twenty Years of Accomplishments, Twenty Years of Appreciation. Ending our 20th anniversary year with a bang!

Our 20th anniversary celebration truly represented what the Howell Foundation stands for:  a sense of community, the importance of women's health research, empowering women with informational events, and introducing young minds to science with our scholarship program. Today, after 20 years, the inspiration brought about by Dr. Howell has allowed the Foundation to award  over 200 scholarships to aspiring researchers and doctors,  to hold over 80 educational events and to fund 3 grants addressing the health of underserved and/or "at risk" women in our community. The celebration was marked with testimonials from our scholars, all of whom are on their way to success.  Our first CEI program is starting to create an impact on Latino women in our community.  The support of our sister organization, Soroptimist International of La Jolla, was felt with donations towards our 2016 programs and fabulous attendance at our luncheon.  Dr. Stanley Maloy from one o...

Doctoral researchers  to focus on sleep disorders in pregnancy and breast feeding patterns  San Diego, CA - August, 2015 .   The Doris A. Howell Foundation announced the recipients of the Cheryl A. Wilson Scholarships to CDR Ryan Nations with the project entitled “Sleep disordered breathing and pregnancy: prevalence and outcomes at delivery”, mentored by Dr. Cynthia Connelly; and to Jodi O’Brien with the research project entitled “Examining breastfeeding patterns and nurse factors associated with in-hospital formula supplementation” sponsored by nursing faculty member, Dr. Mary Barger; both scholarship recipients are candidates for a doctoral degree at USD Hahn School of Nursing. Celebrating Men's Health Month: 10 Top Differences Between Men and Women's Health

June is National Men's Health Month. Just as with women's health, men's health problems have an impact on wives, mothers, daughters and sisters; often times becoming a family matter.  On the gender differences between men and women when it comes to health related issues, here are how both genders compare: Alcohol – Women tend to have higher blood alcohol than men after consuming the same amount of alcohol; even when size differences are considered.  This is because women produce less of the gastric enzyme that breaks down ethanol in the stomach.  Heart Disease – Heart disease kills over 50,000 more women than men, and on average strikes 10 years later than men.  Women are also more likely to have a second heart attack within a year of the first one.  For more information on the differences between men and women in regards to heart disease, check out the summary of women and heart disease here .
