Not because we are old, but because we will eventually get there! Let's make our journey easier!

Have you ever wondered what steps we can take to prepare ourselves for healthy aging? Do we even know where to start? What resources are available to us to ensure a happy aging process? What do we need to consider if we are taking care of a family member?

The Howell Foundation will celebrate its last luncheon of the year on November 11 with a topic that concerns us all: 'Intelligent Aging".  We have the honor of hosting two experts that can give us a in-depth perspective on the intelligent steps to to take in our aging journey.

Claudia Kawas, MD, Professor of Neurology, UCI School of Medicine, and lead investigator of the “The 90 + Study” (as seen on 60 Minutes) is dedicated to advancing knowledge about the cognitive and physiological changes that occur in aging.  Since 1989, hundreds of older adults have contributed their time and effort to helping scientists explore healthy brain aging.

Claudia Kawas, MD, Professor of Neurology, UCI School of Medicine, is a geriatric neurologist and researcher in the areas of aging and dementia. Her work is concentrated on the epidemiology of aging and Alzheimer's disease, in the determinants of successful aging, longitudinal and clinical pathological investigations, clinical trials, and most recently, studies in cognitive and functional abilities of the Oldest Old (over 90 years of age). Dr. Kawas is a graduate of Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania), and completed her medical studies at the University of Louisville (Kentucky) and neurology residency training and a fellowship in dementia and aging at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York.  Dr. Kawas moved to the University of California, Irvine in 2000, where she is Principle Investigator of The 90+ Study and Associate Director of the UCI Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders.

Our own Cheryl Wilson, MS, MA, RN and CEO of St. Paul’s Senior Homes and Services, specializes in the care of the elderly.  She will be addressing specific information for the caregivers of the family in her presentation 'I want to enjoy retirement, but find I am my parents caregiver!'; specifically:
  • What to do when you get that 11pm call – your mother has fallen & broken her hip?
  • What does Medicare help with? – not much!
  • Can a retirement community help – permanently or temporarily?

Cheryl Wilson, MS, MA, RN has a Master’s degree from the University of Redlands, MA and an RN from Prince Henry's Nursing School.  Ms. Wilson has earlier experience as a Critical Care/Operating nurse and consultant to long-term care programs/new programs & facilities development. Prior to her current position, she also was a Pediatric Clinic Supervisor and an instructor for the Nursing Administration examination for Med-Ed and American Nurses College. Cheryl has served on the Howell Board in many capacities, including that of Chair.
