Update: UCSD Howell Scholar Making Strides in the Research World!

Deepika Suresh
Just a short time after she presented her field of research at the Foundation's lunch last May, Deepika Suresh was invited to present the progress of her work at the UCSD Summer Research Conference last week. .

When she applied for the Foundation's scholarship, she mentioned that her priority was to learn all that she needed in order to succeed in medical school and ultimately her profession:  "I started in a research lab my first week of freshman year, eager to learn about what research entailed and how I could make my mark in the scientific world".

And we are proud to say she is doing just that!  She reached out to us to tell us a little about the progress of her work.

"My research project for this summer involves developing an education intervention on genetic risk assessment in young breast cancer survivors (YBCS).  My objective is to develop content about genetic risk assessment in YBCS for a web-based survivorship care plan that my lab is in the process of creating" Suresh comments.

"The three main steps in developing this content include going through the professional society guidelines to see what they recommend about these YBCS undergoing genetic risk assessment, completing a systematic review, and conducting interviews with genetic counselors. Ultimately, I wanted to find out what the main barriers are that prevent YBCS from undergoing genetic risk assessment and how to overcome these.

So far, I have summarized the recommendations from the professional society guidelines, conducted various interviews with genetic counselors, and finalized my search strategy for the systematic review. Through these steps, I have gotten an understanding of all the barriers involved and created a plan in how my content will overcome these and increase the number of YBCS undergoing genetic risk assessment.

I am currently in the midst of conducting this systematic review and I will begin writing the content for the website within the next week. By the end of the summer I hope to finalize this content on the website that will be launched very shortly, and perhaps begin writing a methods manuscript on the process taken to develop this content".

Thank you Deepika for reaching out to us.  We wish you all the success! Stay tuned for more...
